Iran-U.S. talks on Iraq unlikely to succeed: top official

TEHRAN (AFP) -- A senior Iranian official has said that direct negotiations with the United States on Iraq were unlikely to yield any results, the official news agency IRNA reported on Sunday.

"I see it as unlikely that negotiations with the U.S.... will amount to something considering America's destructive measures and its political confusion in Iraq," said Ali Akbar Velayati, a top advisor on foreign affairs to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

"The Americans have proved that they are not honest. It is simplistic to hope that Iran-U.S. talks would resolve the Iraqi people's problems," said Velayati, who was also the Islamic Republic's longest-serving foreign minister.
